Industry Spotlight: Sports Team Ownership

{{brizy_dc_image_alt imageSrc=

The professional sports landscape is entering a new phase of institutionalisation, with team and club ownership (football in particular) attracting unprecedented interest from private capital, strategic operators, and global investor groups. This shift reflects a broader recognition that sports organisations are no longer solely competitive sports teams; they have become diversified media, entertainment, and real-estate platforms with recurring, multi-channel revenue potential.

Across Europe, ownership groups are actively seeking partners capable of supporting stadium modernisation, digital engagement strategies, and international commercial expansion. A prime example of this recent capital influx is the Atlético de Madrid football club deal announced in November, which saw Apollo Global Management acquire around 55% of the club, for a reported €2.5 billion.

Value creation is increasingly driven by monetisation of global fanbases, optimisation of matchday and non-matchday revenues, and strengthening of the underlying business operations. As these needs grow, mid-market clubs are becoming viable targets for investors who can provide both capital and operational expertise. This movement is reflected by the recent sale in June of a 43% stake in London-based Crystal Palace FC to Woody Johnson, co-owner of the New York Jets, for a figure believed to be around £190 million.

The economics underpinning team ownership are also evolving. Stable broadcast contracts, league-level revenue sharing, and long-term sponsorship agreements provide strong visibility on cash flows, while the rise of data-usage and commercial analytics offer new levers for operational improvement.

Multi-club ownership models are also rapidly expanding, enabling talent development synergies, shared data platforms, and coordinated commercial partnerships. Investors are increasingly attracted to clubs that can form part of a wider network.

In this context, the sector’s appeal is clear: sports teams are unique assets that combine brand strength, loyal communities, and diversified revenue streams.
